Town Hall Meeting: Intellectual Pluralism

MU’s mission statement reflects the public nature of our work: “Scholarship and teaching are daily driven by a sense of public service – the obligation to produce and disseminate knowledge that will improve the quality of life in the state, the nation and the world.”
Our statement of values focuses on building an academic community around four values: Respect, Responsibility, Discovery, and Excellence.
Intellectual pluralism is critical to these four central values, and MU is committed in its rules – and in its practices – to encouraging and supporting robust debate over matters of academic interest.
The proper expression of both academic rights and responsibilities is required for a reasoned and respectful debate that explores a diversity of views and perspectives about complex, and often controversial topics.

Recommendations:
1. Each campus will designate an individual to receive student concerns/complaints ;
2. Each campus will establish a readily accessible website for students to register concerns/complaints;
3. Ombudsman role is to coordinate/direct complaints, not necessarily to solve them.
